Sixpenny Wood is located at the eastern side of a much larger woodland known locally as Mill and Stable Woods. It is easily accessible along a well established ride system yet due to the location feels isolated and peaceful. Sixpenny Wood is believed to be ancient and forms part of the original setting to Alresford Hall. Set back from noisy roads, the woodland is part of a series of woods that surrounded the hall and made up the Alresford Hall estate.

It is level and well-drained sitting on the top of a valley and is made up of a marvellously diverse selection of mature trees. Some majestic Scots pines tower over the southern edge of the woodland and flank the private ride that allows the owner easy access to all areas of the woodland. A mix of sweet chestnut and mature oaks are scattered throughout the woodland along with areas of leyland cyprus, holly and cedar trees which give the woodland all year cover.

Two yew trees mark a perfect spot to rest or camp. A previous owner has cleared an area for a camp fire and one can imagine sitting here in quiet contemplation. If you are early and move carefully you may catch sight of a muntjac deer or the fallow herd that visits the woodland. Foxes are often seen stalking cautiously through the woodland causing the squirrels to dash back to the tree tops, their chattering breaking the silence.

The soil in the area contains a lot of stone and gravel and the woodlands are level and well drained so don't get too wet underfoot even during the late winter months.  These woodlands are so special they are covered by a tree preservation order, this simply protects the woodland and does not prevent woodland management - free guidance is available from the Forestry Commission and other organisations.

Access  Is off the B1027 Tenpenny Hill road just south of and opposite Bridge Farm Stables. There is a full right of way along the stoned track which runs up between rows of trees.

There is a covenant click here to read designed to ensure that all can have quiet and peaceful enjoyment of their woodland.
