Forge Wood is a gently sloping site in a well-wooded area of low hills set in the High Weald AONB.
Sitka spruce was planted in about 1960 and Forge Wood is now considered to be a plantation on ancient woodland (PAWS). The woodland has recently had a full survey and also has a management plan and felling licence in place and a grant available for replanting, all available on request. The plan aims to return the woodland to a full ancient woodland site.
Within the wood, aside from the Sitka spruce, which mainly lies on the eastern side, oak, ash, cherry, chestnut and birch can also be found throughout. Woodland flowers are also present in season, including wide areas of bluebells, wood sorrel and wood anemone. Various wide tracks lead you in and around the woodland making it very easy to navigate and manage the wood. The current owner has an agreement in place with a neighbouring land owner to allow shared use of a Kawasaki Mule 4x4, in return for occasional access to the wood.
Numerous clearings and also a campfire in the central area of the woodland making it ideal for camping and woodland activities. The woodland is set in a very private location with open meadows to the south allowing lots of light into the wood. Excellent drainage has also been installed at various point throughout to ensure access all year round.
For anyone interested in the sporting aspects, the wood is cleared by Sussex Police for calibres up to .357 magnum to be used from the floor, and for .308 from high seats.
The small village of Staplecross, with shops and a good pub is just a five minute walk away. Further afield, Bodiam and Bodiam castle lie a short drive to the north. To the south, Battle and Hastings are also within easy reach.
Ward is Northern Rother and the County Council is East Sussex.
Boundaries: The southern border is fenced and follows the neighbouring meadow. The eastern boundary is partly fenced and follows the public footpath to the northern point. To the north and west, the boundaries are open and follow an internal woodland track.
Access: There is excellent vehicle access all year round with a parking area inside the woodland, marked 'A' on the map. There are two private gated entrances to the woodland itself, access to these is via two shared locked gates.
