A number of granite rock formations are within the wood, giving a real feel that you are deep in the heart of historic Dartmoor.
Ducksmoor Wood was recently harvested in order to add biodiversity, the conifers being clear-felled and the ground replanted with hundreds of native broadleaved trees including oak, ash and cherry. Additionally wild grass and native flower seeds have been sown.
Numerous tracks show the presence of red deer, roe deer and badgers. From the south-western side you will find breathtaking views of Blackingstone Rock and Dartmoor beyond.Situated close to the small hamlet of Westcott, it is near the Moor village of Bridford. The moorland town of Mortenhampstead lies only 4 miles away. This town has plenty of shops, a school, and numerous pubs!
It is only a 20-minute drive to Exeter for supplies as well as links to the M5, Exeter airport and also via the A30 at Whiddon Down to Cornwall. Nearby is the local feature of Blackingstone Rock which is a great viewing point offering 360° views of the surrounding moorland. On the summit there are water-filled rock basins which can be reached by climbing the iron ladder. Blackingstone Rock is a typical example of Dartmoor granite found in this region.
