The wood is a delightful mix of broadleaf planting, grassy tracks and rides with an open glade to the east to encourage wildflowers, an area of mature woodland with a stream running along the whole length of the eastern boundary.
The mature wood is mostly oak with some beech and ash and with holly and hazel below. The planting is a rich mix of species (including oak, alder, whitebeam and rowan) whilst woody shrubs around the rides have been chosen to encourage the presence of butterflies, bees and other insects. Species planted include guelder rose, alder buckthorn, spindle, hawthorn and holly.
In the far corner there is a really useful modern shed.
Raptor posts positioned at intervals along the edges of the rides provide perfect observation and resting places for the birds of prey which frequent the wood. These include kestrels, barn owls, buzzards and sparrow-hawks. Both roe and red deer are regular visitors and there are many signs of badgers, foxes and rabbits being present too.
The rides and inter-connecting tracks make it an absolute joy to walk around Mayflower Wood and to simply enjoy the surroundings. Perfect for camping, picnics and family forestry.
Parking on hardstanding is available in the wood, near the entrance, after passing through the gate.
There is a covenant click here to read designed to ensure that all can have quiet and peaceful enjoyment of their woodland.
