Peace Wood is a picturesque, secluded woodland nestled deep in the Devon countryside between Exmoor and Dartmoor.

Despite its modest size, Peace Wood boasts a remarkable diversity of flora. Mature oak and beech trees create a spacious atmosphere, while ash, holly, hawthorn, hazel, and chestnut are also present. The high canopy and open fields to the south allow ample light to reach the forest floor, promoting natural regeneration and supporting the growth of ferns and grasses. In season, bluebells blanket the ground.

A small natural stream runs along the western boundary, attracting a variety of wildlife, including frequent visits from deer, as seen in picture 18.

Scattered throughout the site are numerous open areas, perfect for camping and other woodland activities. As its name suggests, Peace Wood is an ideal retreat for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle and immerse themselves in nature.

Conveniently located in mid-Devon, the coastlines to the north and south are easily accessible. Additionally, the nearby market town of Chumleigh offers shops and restaurants just a short drive away.

Boundaries: The boundary is fenced to the south and east and borders open fields and farmland. North and west are open and join neighbouring woodland. The access track runs along the western edge. The boundary is also marked with blue paint. 

Access: Vehicle access is possible all year round via a hard track and shared locked gates marked A and B on the map. Parking is possible within the woodland.

Covenant: There is a covenant on the wood designed to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of this and adjoining woodlands.

  • Pass by the gate and follow the track marked blue on the map. 
  • You will have to open and close several unlocked gates along the way, the last gate will be locked and you will need to climb over it. 
  • After approximately 500m, the northern corner of Peace Wood will be on your left.
  • It's a lovely walk and should only take 10 - 15 minutes.
