The loudest sound you will hear when you visit will be the birdsong. Approached through a narrow lane between high Devon banks, Poet's Wood is a gently sloping mature oak woodland complimented with beech, silver birch, hazel and holly under the oak canopy.
Tucked away in the heart of the wood is a very useful metal shed, this is included in the sale and is a welcome shelter when at work in the wood.
As you would expect from a semi-natural ancient woodland there are many areas of spring wildflowers including violets, bluebells, red campion, primrose and thyme-leaved sandwort. There is a small stream that can be vigorous in winter but gently gurgles through the trees in summer and there are a number of areas suitable for making ponds. Badgers, owls and other wildlife are well established and the wood is surrounded by other woodland on two sides, a quiet, wooded lane on one side and by farmland on the other.
For lovers of literature as well as lovers of woodland, Poet's Wood is the perfect twenty first century escape. At five acres it is big enough to be away from the world, yet small enough to manage easily. Oaks, seclusion, a stream and wildflowers; what more could one desire.
There is a covenant on the wood: "The transferee will not use the property nor permit the Property to be used for motor cross, motorcycle scrambling or other comparable activity or sport."

- From Exeter take the A30 West towards Okehampton and, after about 15 miles, take the slip road signed A382.
- Continue along this road and then take the right turn to North Tawton, just after the Esso garage.
- After a few hundred metres, take the next right, the A2134 (a new road which might not be on your satnav) , signposted to North Tawton and Winkleigh; this takes you north, back over the A30.
- Drive for about 5 miles. Just before North Tawton go straight ahead at the crossroads over the A3072 and continue into the village, straight on at the mini-roundabout. At the centre of the village, bear slightly right, keeping the clock tower on your left, and continue straight on (slightly staggered right then left) through the narrow entrance to the lane to Bondleigh.
- After about a mile, the lane sinks between high Devon banks and the entrance to the woods is at the bottom of the hill on the left. You will see a metal gate with a post and rail fence either side. Please park without blocking the entrance to the farmer's field or the entrance to the cottage garden. Access on foot is through the gate. Follow the track to the right.
