Whitford Copse is an expansive ancient replanted woodland (PAWS) nestled within the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The woodland comprises three distinct zones, each with its own unique character.
Southern Section: The southern part of the woodland is dominated by ash and oak, with a naturally regenerating understory of hazel. Holly, spruce, and occasional cherry and birch trees add to the diversity. Like many woodlands, the ash trees here are affected by dieback, necessitating some management. This presents an opportunity for those interested in forestry, as ash is excellent firewood and could yield some financial return. Seasonal ponds and natural dykes enhance the ecological value of this section.
Wide rides crisscross the woodland, allowing access to all areas with a 4x4 vehicle. While some tracks are overgrown, they could be easily cleared to restore excellent connectivity throughout the site.
Eastern and Northern Sections: To the east and north of the entrance, cedar and spruce dominate, creating a striking contrast to the southern area. A natural dyke runs east to west, offering a picturesque landscape and serving as a haven for wildlife. Further north, the woodland transitions again, featuring mature oak, maple, and birch, with hazel and goat willow scattered throughout.
A meadow to the west bathes this part of the woodland in light, providing lovely views and fostering a tranquil atmosphere. The trees here are well spaced, making navigation easy, and small glades scattered throughout offer perfect spots for camping.
Whitford Copse is ideally situated, with the historic town of Taunton and the M5 motorway just a short drive away. Whether you’re seeking a peaceful retreat, a wildlife haven, or a forestry venture, this woodland offers an exceptional combination of natural beauty and practicality.
Ward is Taunton and Wellington and the county council is Somerset.
Boundaries: SW is open for the most part and follows Whitford Hill. NW and N are fenced and border woodland and open meadow. SE is open and borders neighbouring woodland, the boundary follows the main ride running north to south. S is fenced and borders private property and woodland.
Access: There is excellent vehicle access directly from Whitford Hill. There is a parking area just off the road and parking is possible inside the woodland.
