Cubbage Wood is a primarily mixed conifer woodland, with a small quantity of beech and other broadleaf trees, in the South Shropshire Teme Valley. It slopes quite gently up from the country lane at the south to an unmetalled road at the northern end. There is little undergrowth, so it is very easy to walk around. It is designated an ancient woodland (ancient replanted woodland), and the southern end of the wood is carpeted in bluebells in the spring.
Access: Cubbage Wood adjoins a minor country lane, and is accessed over a very short right of way from the road. There is a hardstanding just inside the wood. A track runs along the western boundary. It is not gated, but there are no public access rights. There is also access from the northern end of the wood directly into the wood from an unmetalled road.
Public access: There are no public footpaths or public access within the wood.
Sporting rights: Included
Mineral rights: Included, except as reserved by statute.
Local area and history: Cubbage Wood is very private and secluded, tucked away, and surrounded by other mature woodland just outside the picturesque village of Bucknell. As this Woodland is a short distance from Bucknell it gives the opportunity to travel to Cubbage Wood by train rather than by car. The wood is roughly 1½ miles from the train station.
Bucknell, even in the 1500s, has been an area that has relied on forestry and farming as its main industry. The timber merchant in Bucknell was the main supplier to the LMS railway, and a major supplier for military vehicles in the First and Second World Wars from their 15,000 acres of forestry land. Nearby at 'Olde Farm', near the river Redlake, there are the remains of a Norman Motte castle that dates back to around 1066.
The town of Knighton is approximately 3 miles away where you will find shops, pubs and bed and breakfast.
Boundaries: The eastern boundary is fenced from adjoining farmland. The southern boundary is the public highway. The Western boundary is fenced from adjoining woodland. The very short northern boundary is an unmetalled unclassified road.
Photographs: were taken in February 2025.
