Strethill Wood

Strethill Wood is a mature broadleaf woodland that is a sufficient size to be very manageable and has two distinctive areas. One is the very secluded broadleaf area that has veteran oak and ash trees and the other is the clearing under the power lines.

The swathe of land under the power lines is South facing which means it gets the best of the sunshine. It has to be kept clear of large trees, so as a result of this the land has ground vegetation such as bracken, ferns and downy birch. It provides a great haven for wildlife which the new owners can enjoy. Alternatively this could become a useful area to use as a 'base' for forestry activities. Other potential uses could include bee keeping, forest gardening, or an outdoor tree nursery.

At the ride stop there is a small path that meanders towards the eastern part of the woodland. Here the tree species that can be found include oak, beech, hazel, lime, silver birch, ash, rowan, holly and yew.

The path continues under the power lines until it comes to an end in a very secluded part of Strethill Wood. This area has some large broadleaf trees that are well spaced and provide an impressive high canopy. Underneath, the woodland floor is clear and flat providing a perfect spot for camping.

Boundaries: The northern and eastern boundaries are fenced from adjoining farmland. Part of the south western boundary is the access track. The remainder of the boundaries are indicated by marker stakes, and all boundaries are further indicated by purple paint, although that has faded a lot in many places.  The boundaries of the adjoining wood to the south are marked with red paint, and that is much clearer along that boundary.

Wildlife: Some of the wildlife that can be seen and heard here include fallow deer, badger, fox, buzzard, rabbit, jay, woodpecker and many song birds that can regularly be seen flying in and out of the cracks of the veteran trees.

Access: A stoned track (concrete on the steeper part) leads from the access gate off the Buildwas Bypass all the way to the ridestop at the entrance to the wood. The track was built over ten years ago, and has blended into the landscape, but is in excellent condition, and never seems to form potholes.

Covenant:  In common with all neighbouring woodland owners, there is a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

Sporting rights: Included.

Mineral rights: Included, except as reserved by statute.

Public footpaths: There are no public footpaths through Strethill Wood or the larger woodland known as Timber Wood.

Local area: Near Strethill Wood is the Iron Bridge Gorge World Heritage Site where the Industrial Revolution can be said to have begun. This started with the first ever cast iron bridge being built, which was given Royal consent in 1776.

Nearby there are lots of interesting places to visit, including Iron Bridge which has many museums, pubs and restaurants that front onto the River Severn, and of course the famous bridge.

Much Wenlock is also very close by, which is very picturesque with good shops and local pubs.
