Wern-y-Wig is a wonderful nature reserve in the making, and will reward the continued support of a new owner.  Parts of the wood are quite wet, especially in the winter, but this feeds the four fantastic small lakes that feature on the eastern side of the wood nearest the main access track.  These come to about an acre in total.  There is also a small stream, just a foot or so wide, that runs through the centre of the land.  Quite apart from their visual appeal, the lakes provide a valuable environment that many insects, birds, and other wildlife enjoy, and a healthy population of blue damselflies can be found along the shores.

Near the main track there is a one acre meadow that, with the help of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, has been managed to favour the Marsh Fritillary butterfly by the planting of Devils’ Bit Scabious, and by grazing at the appropriate time of year with ponies.

Access:  The wood is readily accessible on foot at a number of points off the main track that runs through the larger woodland, alongside the eastern boundary of Wern-y-Wig.  There is also a gateway providing vehicular access to the meadow.

Public Access:  There is no public access of any kind.

Sporting rights: Included.

Mineral rights: Included, except as reserved by statute.

Covenants: in common with the neighbouring woodlands, there is a covenant designed to ensure that all can have quiet and peaceful enjoyment of their woodland.

Local area and history:  A Felling Licence was issued in February 2006 for the felling of the conifer crop, Sitka Spruce, which was at that time understood to be about 35 years old.  No information is available, but it is assumed that the trees were felled sometime in the 12 months after the issue of the licence.  The wood (or at that stage a clearfell site with very few trees) was bought by the current owner in January 2009.

The wood is within the catchment of the headwaters of the Eastern Cleddau, which has its source just 1000 metres to the north, and the wood is just a few metres outside the Eastern Cleddau SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest).

The nearby town of Crymych offers, shops, cafes, and other amenities.

Wildlife: As well as the usual wildlife that might been expected, the following have also been sighted: Kestrel, Goshawk, Reed bunting, Sedge warbler, Grasshopper warbler, Tree pipit, Willow tit - in good numbers, Snipe, Common sandpiper, Teal, Canada geese, and Otter.

Boundaries: The eastern boundary of the wood is the main access track, and is not fenced (apart from the section at the edge of the meadow). The southern boundary is the public highway, and there is a dense hedge, but no fencing.  The remaining boundaries are fenced from adjoining farmland.

Photographs: were taken September 2023.  Video
