Windflower Coppice is tucked away in the very midst of the larger woodland known as Big Wood. Sheltered on all sides by mature woodland and on level ground throughout this really is a peaceful haven.

The woodland is entirely broadleaf, a fair amount of youngish understorey of hazel and some over stood coppice of hazel, ash and alder. Other species present are birch, some young beech, mature poplar and a magnificent mature oak at the entrance parking area. It would benefit from re-coppicing which would further open up the forest floor, encouraging the wildflower growth of which there is already much evidence. Spring will see the woodland awash with bluebells, followed by honeysuckle, wild rose, wood anemone (or windflower) and dog violet.

Coppicing is a good woodland management practice that promotes healthy biodiversity in the woodland, encouraging the proliferation of wildlife as well as providing a sustainable source of fuel or underwood for a great variety of uses, potentially providing some income.

There are some areas in the woodland which have developed as natural clearings. These could be good for camping, or undertaking forestry work, stacking wood or green woodworking.

Windflower Coppice benefits from a well built shed/equipment store and machinery shelter next to the entrance. Please note that the tractor, and any other equipment that may be present are not included in the sale.

Wildlife: Deer have been seen roaming around the wood, and in the spring it is alive with the sounds of numerous species of birds: as well as the usual suspects…. blackbird, wren, chaffinch, chiff chaff, blue tit, robin, dunnock…. Blackcap and Great Spotted Woodpecker have been heard.

Access: The wood has good vehicular access.  A stone track leads from the main gate to a hard standing at the entrance to the wood. Part of this track is reasonably steep, so a four wheel drive vehicle is recommended.  The M4 at Newport is only 11 miles away.

Boundaries: The northern boundary, and much of the western boundary, is the main access track.  All other boundaries are marked with stakes, further identified with red paint. The adjoining woodland to the east, Black Tom Wood, is marked with orange paint, and the wood to the south with blue paint.

Please note that the woodland to the east, Black Tom Wood, is also for sale.

Sporting rights: Included

Mineral rights: Included, except as excluded by statute.

Public footpaths: There are no public footpaths or public access of any kind within the wood.

Covenants: in common with the neighbouring woodlands, there is a covenant designed to ensure that all can have quiet and peaceful enjoyment of their woodland.

Local area: Nearby Raglan and Usk have shops, pubs, post office and petrol and there are several excellent pubs in nearby villages. Abergavenny is an easy drive away, as is the Brecon Beacons National Park.

Directions

From the M4

Exit at Junction 24 and take the A449 northwards towards Usk.

Take the exit onto the A472 towards Usk, As you enter Usk, just after the start of the 20mph limit, turn right signposted Gwehelog. After 2 miles take the turning right, signposted Llandenny. The turning and parking area for Big Wood is on the right after a few hundred metres.

From north of the wood, via the A40,

Take the turning from the roundabout at Raglan signposted Gwehelog and Usk. Follow this road for a couple of miles or so until you see a sign for Gwehelog and then directly after, a sign for Coldharbour. Immediately after this sign, there is a very sharp hairpin turn to the left, which is very difficult to take. It may be easier to take the right turn directly opposite and then, cross over the road and continue onto the minor road until you come to the entrance to Big Wood very shortly on your right.

Please park at the gate taking care not to block access and continue on foot through the wood. Where the track divides, take the left fork and continue until you come to the entrance to Windflower Coppice on your right.
