Heathgate Wood is a semi-ancient broadleaf woodland nestled within the South Downs National Park, just outside the market town of Arundel.

A hard track leads from the main entrance into the site, where you'll first encounter a secure storage container and a parking area. Beyond this, a winding woodland path takes you deeper into the trees. Majestic oaks stand throughout the secluded landscape, accompanied by chestnuts of varying ages, birch, hawthorn, cherry, holly, hazel, beech, ash, and striking yews. In spring, bluebells blanket the woodland floor, adding to the rich diversity of plant life, which also includes butcher’s broom and butterfly bush.

To the west, a gentle stream runs along the boundary, enhancing the natural beauty of the area. The surrounding woodland at Tortington is recognised as a Local Wildlife Site (LWS), home to an abundance of wildlife.

A network of woodland paths leads through the site, passing open glades perfect for various outdoor activities. In the southwest corner, a large bell tent offers a space for summer overnight stays or shelter on rainy days.

Nearby, the White Swan pub is within walking distance, while the historic market town of Arundel, with its pubs, restaurants, and antique shops, is also close by. The coast is just a short drive away.

The ward is Arundel & Walberton and the county council is West Sussex.

Boundaries: The boundary is open to the N, W, S, and fenced E. North follows an open ride and power line. South borders the access track and neighbouring woodland. West borders Binsted Lane and East follows Tortington Lane.

Access: Vehicle access is possible via a shared locked gate and also a second private gate. Parking is possible within the woodland.
